Operation Blackbird: SR-71 Spytacular

The world’s fastest spy plane, one of which is on display at the Kansas Cosmosphere & Space Center, will come to life through the stories of those who flew, maintained and designed the aircraft. On August 24-26, 2012, meet & greet the crew under the Blackbird, listen to stories of how this plane watched over the skies, take in a SR-71 blackbird documentary, grab breakfast in an aircraft hangar, and partake in other aviation related activities. Pilots can fly into the local KHUT airport and enjoy a free shuttle to the Cosmosphere. Buz Carpenter, legendary SR-71 pilot and local Hutchinson KS aviator, Karen Anderson will Co-Chair the SR-71 event.

Fly Around Dine Around / 5:30-7:30 PM

CELEBRATE the amazing SR-71 Blackbird in the Grand Lobby of the Cosmosphere. WELCOME the extraordinary men who flew, designed, and maintained the Blackbird. ENJOY the flavors of Hutchinson presented by your favorite dining establishments. Crew member red carpet arrival at 6:00 pm. Food and Beverage Sponsored by: Anchor Inn, Carlos O'Kelly’s, Dairy Queen, Dillons, Dillons Marketplace, Downtown Sampler, Hog Wild, Hutchinson Town Club, Girst’s Catering for You, Jillian’s Italian Grill, Serendipity Cupcakes, City Beverage, Egbert Liquor, Metropolitan Coffee. Proceed’s will support the Cosmosphere Paint the Roof Fundraising Initiative. Admission is a minimum $15 donation per person. Make your reservations here!

Hangar Breakfast

Take in the sights and sounds of aviation action while enjoying a delicious breakfast to start your day. Pilots from across the region will be flying in for Operation Blackbird. Breakfast is provided by Hutchinson Area Aviators. Free Will Donation to Support Flying Scholarships. Breakfast will be held in Hangar 1, south of the airport terminal. Pilots flying into KHUT can enjoy a free shuttle to and from the Cosmosphere all day.

Adult tickets are $10.00 and children (4-12) are $5.00 per plate. Limited ticket quantities! Advance reservations recommended. Tickets for sale at the door on a space available basis.
