Docent

This volunteer is a tour guide that gives scheduled group tours and answers visitors’ questions. Guides must be friendly and enjoy working with people. The ability to climb stairs and have a good memory to learn and retain information is also needed.


Responsibilities

  • Give tours to school groups or other groups through the Hall of Space Museum. Tours last one hour and groups are usually limited to 30 people.
  • Learn the necessary information for tours by attending the Docent training class offered in the fall. Class meets weekly for 4-8 weeks. Special training may occur as necessary.
  • Help maintain security in the museum to prevent potential vandalism.
  • Promptness and reliability. Tours are scheduled weeks in advance and school groups work on a tight schedule. It is important to deliver your tour group to their next scheduled event on time.
  • Exert discipline as necessary to maintain a meaningful tour for all.
  • Work at information desk or reception office.

Qualifications

  • Ability to present information about the museum in a clear, concise, friendly manner. It is not necessary to have prior knowledge about the space program. We will teach you! Be able to communicate and present an interesting tour to all age levels.
  • The Docent might be asked to give two tours in a row. This can be physically demanding. Also must be capable of walking and standing throughout the museum until the tour is completed.
  • Must be friendly and comfortable with large groups of students.

Time Required

  • Docents generally work 2 or 3 hours a week during the school year, in the morning or afternoon. You may select a specific day of the week for your service. The summertime typically sees fewer tours.

Expectations

  • Satellites are asked to work a minimum of 20 hours a year. If this goal is not met, we remove the satellite’s name from the active list.
  • Satellites are encouraged to attend training sessions when offered.
  • Satellites are asked to sign in when working and record your hours. Total volunteer hours are reported to the KCSC Board of Directors each month
