We take great pride at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in offering you a truly unique educational experience. Our goal is to challenge you and your students with high-impact programming that is flexible, affordable and most of all--FUN! The Cosmosphere is recognized as one of the world's premier space museums, and we offer teachers and students throughout the Midwest resources that are unavailable anywhere else in the region. We realize that field trips mean increased work load for all associated with the visiting school, and we pledge to offer a full-service experience that allows you to make one simple phone call to let us know when you're coming, then leave all the work to us once you walk in the door. Make plans for what more than 28,000 students and teachers discovered last year–a trip to the Cosmosphere is a world-class space adventure!

DISCOVERY CLASSROOM

Take advantage of our information-packed Discovery Classroom and specially trained space science educators to bring applied science to life. Presentations are tailored for the ages of your students.

Robotics Challenge (grades 6 & up, 45 students max.)
The Robotics Challenge is a lesson in teamwork and problem solving. Students learn the basics of robotics missions, work together to design their own robot, and then manage the robot’s performance on a simulated Martian surface.

Living in Space
Eating, sleeping, and dressing are quite a challenge in space. Learn how ordinary tasks, personal space, and recreation time change the concept of “Home Sweet Home” aboard the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station.

Simple Science
Let our experienced instructors entertain you with this live demonstration show highlighting the fundamentals of science. You’ll see fire, explosions and slime, oh my!

Dr. Goddard's Lab
In a theatrical setting representing the early research laboratory of the father of modern rocketry, Dr. Robert Goddard, this live science show is packed with surprises. Demonstrations highlight early experiments with solid and liquid-fueled rocket engines. (Recommended for all ages.)

Ice Cream Making
Your students will be amazed as ordinary ingredients like cream, vanilla and sugar are combined with liquid oxygen to make instant ice cream. While the entire class enjoys this timeless treat, students will learn about the special problems encountered by astronauts living in space. (limit – 30 students)

CAREY IMAX® DOME THEATER

The opportunity to watch one of our IMAX® features is a definite highlight of any trip to the Cosmosphere. Films are brought to life on the 44 foot, domed IMAX® screen with 10,000 watts digital surround sound, letting moviegoers feel as if they’re part of the on-screen action.

Lewis and Clark- Great Journey West
With stunning aerial cinematography and meticulous recreations brought to life with IMAX® technology, Lewis & Clark dramatizes the legendary early 19th-century expedition that crossed the uncharted North American West. Aided throughout by the generosity of Native Americans, including Sacagawea, the teenaged girl who traveled with them, Lewis and Clark trekked 8,000 miles over a two-year period to find a water passageway to the Pacific Ocean .

Sea Monsters

Produced by National Geographic, Sea Monsters’ stunning, realistic, computer-generated animation transports audiences back to the Late Cretaceous, when a great inland sea divided North America in two. The film follows a curious and adventurous dolichorhynchops – familiarly known as a ‘dolly’ –as she travels through the most dangerous oceans in history. Along the way, she encounters long-necked plesiosaurs, giant turtles, enormous fish, fierce sharks, and the most dangerous sea monster of all, the mosasaur.

Our planetarium brings the night sky within reach with multimedia presentations that introduce your students to the wonders of our universe.

The Night Sky – Live!
The Night Sky – Live! is our flagship planetarium show. Students learn about the stars, the constellations, the reasons for the seasons, and our dance partner, the Moon. The program always ends with a tour of tonight’s sky and upcoming celestial events (age-adjusted for your class).

Voyage to the Planets
Take a tour of the solar system, visiting the planets through the latest NASA images projected on our 40-foot dome (grades 3 through 9).

We Really Did Go to the Moon
Fake moon landings? We Really Did Go to the Moon answers all the conspiracy theorist’ charges in a stirring, fact-filled, 35-minute movie tribute to the Apollo program.

Bubble Gum, You , and The Milky Way
Bubble Gum explores the deep bond that exists between you and the stars from your point of view. Topics include the solar system, the life cycles of stars, pulsars, black holes, what it has to do with you before you were you and what it has to do with you now. Bubble Gum is suitable for all ages

HALL OF SPACE MUSEUM TOURS

Enhance your students’ space education with a field trip to the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center . In the Mollett Early Spaceflight Gallery, they’ll be immersed in the story of the Space Race from both the United States and Russian perspectives. Your class will be able to stand in the Titan Rocket Pit, hearing the engines hiss as it prepares to launch a Gemini spacecraft. Inside the gallery, students can learn the many secrets behind the Soviet space program, view the spacesuit worn by Wally Shirra, one of the Original 7 Mercury astronauts, view Liberty Bell 7 and much more.

The story of just what it took to get to the Moon comes to life in the Apollo Gallery where you’ll find the actual Apollo 13 command module Odyssey, a moon rock, flown Apollo spacesuits, and a 1/10th scale model of the amazing Saturn V rocket.

Free, guided tours of the Hall of Space Museum are provided by trained museum docents. Tours are age-adjusted for your class.

Scavenger Hunts are available for the Hall of Space Museum.

STUDENT ASTRONOMY DAY

Students have an entire day of structured learning and fun. Make solar system keychains, see the Planetarium show "The Night Sky Live", learn the phases of the Moon and much more. (For grades K-8 with material adapted for levels).
